Director Lee Yoon-ki(aka Lee Yun-Gi) last year made an auspicious debut in feature filmmaking with ``This Charming Girl.’’ The film won the New Currents Award at the 9th Pusan Film Festival and secured Lee a solid reputation in the international festival circuit being invited to Sundance and Berlin among others.
This year, Lee was back with his second film ``Love Talk,’’. An intense drama focusing on three wounded characters whose paths cross against the backdrop of the Korean expatriate community in Los Angeles, ``Love Talk’’ made eyebrows rise for characters actually do talk, and a lot, whereas dialogue was almost absent from Lee’s previous, name-making film.
However, it was equally enchanting for its jazzy roundedness and sensitive character portraits.
Love Talk intertwines the lives of three individuals of various levels of Korean-Americanization in Los Angeles, California.
Sunny (Bae Jong-ok - Chilsu and Mansu, Jealousy Is My Middle Name) works at a "massage" parlor where she obliges all requests except for marriage. Renting a room in her house is Ji-seok (Park Hee-soon - Antarctic Journal), a man who has just come to The States from South Korea. He ends up working at a Korean video store hoping to rekindle what was lost with Young-shin (Park Jin-hee - Byul, Love In Magic) by creating a fateful accident one day in LA's Koreatown. Young-shin is the DJ of a Korean radio program offering advice about romantic relationships
