Like the Mona Lisa's expression in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, the domestic film ``Miso (A Smile)'' is somewhat of an enigma. The quiet, low-budget drama seems to offer an intimate look at one woman's search for identity, but by the time the end credits roll, the character feels as opaque as she was in the beginning.

The premise of the film, however, is an interesting one. So-jong (Chu Sang-mi) is a young photographer who is planning to go and study in the United States with her live-in boyfriend. Everything seems to be going as planned until she discovers her photos are consistently coming out slightly out of focus _ a minor problem that she first attributes to her equipment.

The source of the problem, however, turns out to be far graver. So-jong learns that she is slowly but surely losing her eyesight. This fact brings everything in So-jong's life into question, including her relationship with her boyfriend, her family and ultimately, herself.

The film then attempts to show So-jong's journey to try to reconnect with her sense of identity, but the process of rediscovery _ taking her first to her hometown, to various relic grounds and finally to a flight training school _ turns out to be an elusive one that provides her with far more questions than answers.
