Last Present is generous in many ways. It offers much to the audience because it gives us a cinematic experience on a Shakespearean scale. We have a tragicomic drama presenting us with a hero and heroine, and comic relief provided by the two actors who play the role of clowns. But Last Present is also bighearted to its cast, particularly actor Lee Jong-jae. His extraordinary talent is used to its full potential in this film. The masks of tragedy and comedy suit this thespian equally well. A tall, ungainly figure with long, lanky limbs, he's the object of fun in the comic mode, but his tender eyes and handsome face make him a fit subject for tragedy; the hero's misfortunes move us. The film score by Jo Sung-woo is another fine offering for the way it carries each pivotal scene to its climax.
